Just thinking about “Breakfast in America’ this morning. What is your favorite breakfast snack? You may just love a hot breakfast sandwich. What could the risk be with a breakfast sandwich?
The sandwich could have an egg, ham, cheese, salt, pepper, butter, mayo, and bread, yum. Seems like a pretty low-risk affair, only Salmonella, Listeria, Staph, Heavy Metals, Aflatoxins and Pesticides to worry about this morning. Looks like I am only going one down in my partner relationship. You probably think that I am being just a wee bit short-sighted. You are asking yourself, why didn’t he include the packaging material that was in the ingredients? What about the ingredients in the ingredients? What about the printing on the packaging?
You can control your handling and storage temperature practices at home, provided you know the appropriate practices.
There is some heat treatment in the preparation of the sandwich, but not necessarily a pathogen kill step. The cooking step is probably only applied to the egg. So, how risky is your Risk? Somewhat a one-dimensional approach, you will only address the pathogens and not even the Staph toxin.
How much do you trust your partners? On what basis have you developed the trust? In other industries, they say “Trust, but verify”.
You eat your sandwich. Then later you go for a run or bike ride. You care about your health. During the exercise, you start feeling ill and have an urgent need to visit the bathroom. As the song goes, “Take the Long Way Home”, you should probably rethink that route.
Share-ifyers, at home, you are on your own to manage your food safety program. For your business, be that trusted partner. Use Share-ify to manage your risk with evidence from your partners. You can assure that all hazards have been identified by your partners. You can verify that there is evidence the partners’ programs are mitigating the Risk.
You may rethink your sandwich or not, but at least your dog does not have anything to worry about this morning. Yikes
Share-ifyers,
Trust, but verify
